Surprise! It's your favorite corn meal
When I was growing up my mother always used Stiver's Best cornmeal ... and then it just wasn't on the store shelves anymore.
My husband stopped by Kroger the other day to get a few things, including cornmeal mix and came back with Stiver's Best. He asked me if this was OK because he couldn't find anything else and of course I told him he had stumbled onto our old favorite!
I am glad it is back on store shelves. It makes great cornbread--kind of coarse--kind of fresh. I think it tastes kind of like cornmeal fresh from the meal. I used it tonight to batter and cook our favorite summer dish that my mom always called "Smith Special." It usually consists of most any kind of garden vegetable you can chop up, lightly batter and fry in a small amount of vegetable oil--in an iron skillet, of course.
I just had to pass this on. Its like getting back something lost. I think I am a little too emotional about it. I AM happy to find it again.

ReplyDeleteI'm glad you rediscovered Stivers Cornmeal. I have a great cornbread recipe from "the gift horse restaurant (Foley, AL). It was called Mensfolk Cornbread and it was good, and filled with yummy cheesiness! I haven't made it in years!
ReplyDeleteThanks. I will try it. Can't wait.
